Review

Each week you’ll spend some time reviewing the previous week’s lesson. Did anything happen last week that brought the lesson to mind, and what did you learn from it?

Watch

Watch the following discussion-starter video. It’ll set the topic of discussion for the group.

  1. Lesson/Discussion

Unpacking questions from the video:

  1.   Do you use weather forecasts to plan your day?
  2.   How is prophecy like speaking in tongues?
  3.   How is prophecy like interpretation of tongues?

Prophecy is the gift of supernatural utterance from God in the language of the speaker and hearers. Prophecy literally means to speak forth. It can be an inspired utterance, which some refer to as forthtelling. Or it can be a prediction of the future, made under divine inspiration, which some refer to as foretelling. The Bible records many instances of both types.

Discussion questions:

  1. Read these Bible examples of prophecy. Describe each one as either predicting (foretelling) or revealing (forthtelling)?
    • John 1:29
    • Acts 2:14-17
    • Matthew 3:11
    • Matthew 26:68
    • Ezekiel 37:4-7
    • Acts 22:13-15
  2. Describe a personal example of either foretelling or forthtelling.

Read, reread, retell 1 Corinthians 14:1-5 and Acts 11:27-29.

Discussion questions:

  1.   Why did Paul declare that prophecy was superior to speaking in tongues?
  2.   Describe how the prophecy in Acts 11 edified the early church.
  3.   How can prophecy edify the church today?

Read, reread, retell Acts 20:22-24, 21:4, 10-12, 13-14, 23:11

Discussion questions:

  1.   What prophetic message did Paul receive? Was it accurate?
  2.   How did the other people that heard his prophecy interpret it?
  3.   How did Paul interpret it?
  4.   Who should determine the meaning and application for a prophecy?
  5.   How would you respond if a prophecy would instruct you to move to another state or to marry a certain individual?
  6.   How can prophesies be fallible if they are God-inspired?
  7.   How would you react to a prophecy that contradicts the Bible?
  8.   An acquaintance received a prophecy, “This young man has the spirit of David on him.” What would that mean to him? To his girlfriend?
