Mary Walker was a young girl when she started drinking.

During that time, she went to church but felt that all she heard was hell and damnation.

“My definition of God was an ogre in the sky who just wanted to make me jump through hoops and follow his rules,” said Mary, “I was so angry and mad because I couldn’t find out why God had made me. I couldn’t make my life perfect enough for him.”

Still, every night as she would lay down to sleep, often drunk, she would say this prayer, “God, please help me to live for you before I die.” She was so afraid of death and hell. Her life got so bad and everything was in shambles. That’s when she believes God intervened, and she found herself in AA (Alcoholics Anonymous).

“In AA, they tell you to find someone who has what you want and ask them to be your sponsor. There was a woman there who had everything that I was desiring for my life. She had joy and peace. I couldn’t figure out where she was getting it from.”

Mary asked this woman, “What do you have? I want it?” She responded simply, “Jesus. Can I pray with you?” Mary agreed and for the first time in her life she felt she met God for real. She found that He loved her and He wanted to take this journey with her. He had been waiting for her with open arms.

“Since then, he has been putting me back together, piece by piece. He has healed a wound in my heart that I had for as long as I can remember. He has given me a love that I can’t describe,” Said Mary.

She has now found the source of her joy and peace: Jesus!  Mary is now nine years sober.
